STOP-DWI Program to Coordinate Memorial Day Weekend DWI Crackdown

Checkpoints and patrols run May 26-30, 2017

(Binghamton, NY) The Broome County STOP-DWI Program today announced that law enforcement agencies across Broome County will deploy special DWI enforcement patrols to help ensure that our roadways will be safe during the Memorial Day weekend.

“We encourage everyone to get out and enjoy all the great summer activities in our area responsibly and to remember if you will be drinking alcohol, have a plan to and from your destination.  Use a designated driver, taxi, or walk. Whatever you do, just don’t drink and drive, “said Broome County Executive Jason Garnar.

Don’t just make Memorial Day Weekend party plans—make a plan to stay alive.

  • If you plan on drinking, make arrangements now for how you’ll get home by downloading the free STOP-DWI Have A Plan mobile app at
  • Consider getting a sober ride to take you to your destination so you won’t even have the option later to drive impaired
  • Avoid drinking too much alcohol to fast. Pace yourself. Count your drinks. Eat plenty of food, takes breaks, and alternate with non-alcoholic drinks
  • If you know someone who is about to drive or ride while impaired, take their keys and help them make safe travel arrangements to where they are going
  • If you’re hosting a party, offer non-alcoholic drinks and ask your guests to designate a sober driver in advance
  • Remember that many over-the-counter and prescriptions drugs, taken by themselves or mixed with alcohol, can cause impairment. Drugged driving is impaired driving and is just as dangerous as alcohol-impaired driving. Consult your pharmacist or physician before taking any medications and driving

STOP-DWI crackdowns are comprised of several periods organized by the New York State STOP-DWI Foundation. These efforts are supported with funding from both the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
